The Twist That Untwists | from Comfort Your S-I Joints, Unit 2 Lawrence Gold

February 16, 2015

The Twist That Untwists is an integration exercise that builds upon those that have preceded it in Comfort Your S-I Joints. “Integration” means that with this exercise, you incorporate the effects of the preceding exercises into an overall, larger pattern. You feel better put together, move more easily and move in better balance.

I explain the rationale for the S-I Joint regimen (send blank email to s-i.joint.pain@somatics.com for the entire regimen) in the following entry: Understanding the S-I Joints, Relieving S-I Joint Pain | http://lawrencegoldsomatics.blogspot.com/2011/04/understanding-sacro-iliac-joints.html |

Freeing and Balancing the Front and Back Hip Joint Muscles | from Comfort Your S-I Joints, Unit 2 Lawrence Gold

This sidelying demonstration of Cat Stretch Exercise #5 (The Cat Stretch Exercises | http://somatics.com/page7-cat_audio.htm) | shows how to integrate the lateral (side) hip joint muscles. This more advanced version incorporates head lifting and lowering movements synchronized with the movement of the leg.

This somatic education exercise combines with Nose in the Hole, an exercise for freeing twisting movements of the trunk, shoulders, and neck. | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDJbPKaAALU |

Ida Rolf, developer of The Rolf Method of Structural Integration, in her book, Rolfing, the Integration of Human Structures, referred to the hip joints as “the joints that determine symmetry”. This exercise fosters that symmetry.

Gentle Spine Waves | Practice Session Ending Movement | from Comfort Your S-I Joints Lawrence Gold

This movement pattern takes the muscular slack made available by practice of each movement pattern and brings about a centering and lengthening of the spinal column.

It’s a “polishing movement”.

Expect to feel a relaxation, flattening and lengthening of your back immediately after practice.

This movement pattern teaches a kind of control that allows an unusually-complete state of relaxation of the back/spinal musculature.

We use it, along with the other Unit 1 exercise, Sidelying Sacral Self-correction, as preparation for the other exercises of the program to “unlock” the situation before introducing changes of muscle/movement memory that retrain your entire movement system to be compatible with a centered sacrum. It’s a preparatory movement.

Expect to feel a relaxation, flattening and lengthening of your back after the second practice session, or so.
